printing option in PASW 17

Jinkuk Hong
Dear all,
Our center recently upgraded to PASW 17 from SPSS 15.
While I'm still not sure if this is good news or bad news, I have one concern
that I'd like to ask to other users.
when I want to print outputs (File > Print, or clicking print button), PASW
gives me only a selection of printers, but no options for printing such as
double side printing or multiple pages per sheet (usually I get this options
through clicking "Properties" in other applications). This means right now I
can print single side one page only, which would results in huge waste of
papers (with SPSS15, I used to print four pages per sheet - 2 pages/double
side, or even 8 pages - four pages/double side).
For now, to avoid wasting papers, I export outputs into word file, reformat
and print them, but it's quite a pain in the back.... :-(

I'm wondering if anyone else has similar problems? Any solutions or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
FYI, my computer has Windows XP (if that may matter).

Thanks much,
Jin

Hi,

You're not the only one with this problem....
The only 'solution' is changing the default properties of your
printer. There's no real solution:

http://support.spss.com/Tech/troubleshooting/ressearchdetail.asp?
ID=74103&CD=Yes

Unfortunately, it's not solved in V18.

Jin,

I don't like to hear what you said because spss was informed last year that
16 had this problem along with a number of others. I know because I,
probably along with a number of others ahead of me, sent a list of problems
to tech support and the reply was that they had been filed with development.

But, I want to know this: is your version patched completely? With every
applicable patch? I ask because it's embarrassing to complain about
something that is fixed in a later patch.

Dear Gene Maguin,
I think my version is updated with the most recent patch. It says "Release
17.0.2 (Mar 11, 2009)."

In reply to this post by Francien Berndsen
IIRC, you can define another printer pointing to the same physical device
with the options you want for use in SPSS. Then select that printer within
the Printer selection dialog.

Re: printing option in PASW 17

Francien Berndsen
Thank you, ViAnn, because I do have the same problem.
I haven't thought about this work around. At home, it will be a
solution, but  at work, unfortunately, I have to contact my sys
admin....

But, in addition to my last e-mail: I just posted the same problem to
tech support last week and they told me this problem is not resolved
in V18, so it doesn't matter which exact version of pasw your'e using
(v16 and higher).

ViAnn,

Please elaborate on how to do this. Specifically with a network printer.
When I go into add printers, I see a list of networked printers, I can
select one or more and install them, designating one as the default. And for
that printer, I can set a default page setup.

I'm not connected to any network and am running Vista so I can't elaborate.
Have you talked to your sysadmin?

Re: printing option in PASW 17

Maguin, Eugene
ViAnn,

There's a small thing that spss could do differently. An example is the
printing issue that was discussed last week. I complained about that pretty
shortly after I got 16 on the UB site license. I also complained about a
list of irritating things. The message back was that 'they have been filed
with development'. The implication that I drew is that they would be fixed
in a 17 patch, All in all, an extemely ordinary interaction. Then came the
message last week about printing on 18.

I think it would have been better to have said right up front that Java does
not support certain previous elements of program operation. That statement
snaps the door shut and people would be bitter. I would be. But, you've
avoided completely that long, lingering hope for and suspicion about future
fixes. And, all in all, I think I'd rather know that because spss switched
to java for understandable reasons certain things are no longer possible
than have the implied promise that they will be there in a patch or fixed in
the 'next' version.

Re: printing option in PASW 17

ViAnn Beadle
I don't work for SPSS. I retired over two years ago. You seem to think that
I am personally responsible for this problem.

SPSS made the decision to switch to a Java architecture for many reasons,
but most importantly, a portable system that could be simultaneously
released to Windows, Mac, and UNIX users.

The developers, in good faith, tried to replicate all the functionality of
releases which relied upon Windows-only components. Sometimes they were able
to find Java classes that would substitute reasonably well for things like
common dialogs (Open, Save, Print), active-X controls such as RTF edit, and
completely rewrite pivot tables which depended upon a complex active-X
control. There is no doubt that some features provided by Windows propriety
code were lost in the conversion.

When I worked at SPSS, every defect from the field was prioritized based
upon severity and scheduled. Sometimes a defect could not be resolved for
operating system or external reasons. Promises cannot always be delivered
when made in the absence of complete information about what it would take to
meet that promise.
