problem with syntax command

ava26304050
Dear All,

I would like to use SPSS to conduct higher order factor analysis (FA) by using the Schmid–Leiman solution. I followed the steps suggested by Wolff and Preising (2005), changed the critical data such as factor loading and variable name. However, it is not working. SPSS shown : Syntax error:Text/ or syntax error:Text{ . I don’t know what that mean, can anyone help?

Or is there any method other than Woff and Preising that I can use SPSS to conduct higher order factor analysis (FA) by using the Schmid–Leiman solution?

Reference: Wolff and Preising (2005) Exploring item and higher order factor structure with the Schmid-Leiman solution: Syntax codes for SPSS and SAS, Behavior Research Methods,Volume 37, Number 1, 48-58.
Thanks you so much for your help in advance

I believe it would be good of you to POST the syntax and the basics of the method/formulas etc  .
Not everyone who might be able to help you has access to Academic Journals (even though my taxes pay for a lot of the research done under various grants ;(((
Really probably a simple typo (I assume the SPSS code is using the MATRIX command (you don't see { anywhere else ;-(  That's all the ESP_SS for today!

YEP!!!  We need ALL of the actual code that you are trying to run.
After some clever =googling I found a copy of the paper you referenced at

Ava,
FWIW:  Schmid–Leiman was published in 1957.  Seems to me that SEM (Structural Equations Modeling) would be a more appropriate method of addressing/estimating/testing higher order factor models.
Here is one online application you might find interesting.
