Do you want the lines to go vertical from item to item?
You can use Chart Builder to create a chart where the X-axis contains
variable names for the summary variables and the Y is a scale axis.
Go to Help>Base System>Building Charts>Summarizing Separate Variables for
complete instructions.
To make the lines vertical, click on the Transpose button under Basic
Elements in Chart Builder.
You can also create such a chart in IGRAPH. The UI for this is
Graph>Interactive>Line. The chart won't draw as well as Chart Builder in
SPSS 15.

I want to chart the means of 12 items on a single axis, with separate
lines for 4 different regions. Th result should be a graph with the
items on a y axis and the values of the regions linked. like a line
chart with the axis turned.
I guess this should be possible with SPSS 15 but I don't find the good
start point.
