quick Q about eta squared

MICHAEL MCCLOSKEY-2

Hello.

I am hoping you can help me with a question about eta squared (not to be confused with partial eta squared). If you have a mixed design ANOVA with multiple within-subjects variables [e.g., a study  in you recruit men and women and every subject takes four doses of two drugs: so a 2 (gender) x 2 (drug) x 4 (dose) design] would eta squared for a within subjects effect be that effect (e.g. main effect of drug) divided by all of the within subjects effects (e.g., drug, drug*gender, drug error, dose, dose* gender, dose error, drug*dose, drug * dose*gender, drug*dose error) or would it be the within subjects effect divided by only the effects associated with that error term (e.g., drug/ drug+drug*gender+ drug error).

In other words, if a design is

2 (gender) x 2 (drug) x 4 (dose) with drug and dose as repeated measures

Would eta squared for the drug effect be…

Drug / (drug+ drug*gender+ drug error+ dose+ dose* gender+ dose error+, drug*dose+ drug* dose*gender+ drug*dose error)

OR

Drug / (drug+ drug*gender+ drug error)

Thanks in advance for your help

Best

-Mike
