random number set starting point fixed value

Dear List;  I just set the active generator initialization set starting point (fixed) and generated a normal distribution. I assumed that by setting the initialization point that I would be able to replicate the distribution but stats show that the two distributions are not identical. I have googled set starting point and the info that I have read suggests that by using a set fixed value one should be able to replicate the outcome. However, my outcomes are not being replicated. I think I am missing something very basic. Is it that the set point might be fixed but the resulting distiribution of values can be different.  ??  martin

set random number generator set point

Dear List:  In regard to my prior post I had assumed that once I ran the set value that I did not have to run it again for the next distributor. When I re ran the set value and then ran the syntax again the results come out the  same.  martin

Martin, please post your syntax.  That will allow others to see if they can
duplicate what you're seeing, and perhaps give them some insight into how to
fix the problem.

There are two entirely different random number generators in Statistics: the older, traditional generator and the newer and better - more random - Mersenne twister.  Their seeds are set by SET SEED and MTINDEX, respectively.  Which one is in use is determined by SET RNG.

So it is possible that you are setting the seed for the generator that is not currently in use.  SHOW RNG displays the current setting, which persists between sessions.

The MT generator is recommended, but the older generator is still present for compatibility.
