Hello Safa,
You can read .spo output
files in Statistics 16 or 17 with the Legacy Viewer. The resolutions below my
signature provide the links to download the viewer and installation
instructions. Note that the Legacy Viewer was not included on the CD for
Statistics 17, as explained in Resolution 80328 below, but is available at the
links provided in both resolutions.

Problem Subject:
SPSS 16.0 and later - How do I view and edit output created in previous
versions of SPSS for Windows?
Problem Description:
I have SPSS 16.0 or later for Windows. When I attempt to open an output
file (*.spo) created in a previous version of SPSS for Windows, I encounter the
following error:
File: 'filename.spo'
The file is not an SPSS Viewer document.
I see there is a new extension (SPV) for output files in SPSS 16.0. How do I
view output files created in previous versions?
Resolution Description:
Historically, SPSS (*.spo) output files have been largely forward-compatible
(i.e, you can open .spo files created in earlier versions of SPSS) and largely
not backward-compatible (i.e., you can't open .spo files created in later
versions of SPSS). In version 16.0, however, the re-write of the output format
was so extensive as to necessitate using a completely different kind of file.
SPSS versions 16.0 and later are simply unable to open the kinds of output
objects present in a .spo file, and there is no true conversion method
available.
In order to provide access to .spo files in 16.0 and later versions of SPSS, we
have included on the SPSS 16.0 for Windows CD (full version only) an
application called the "Legacy Viewer," which is the SPSS 15.0
SmartViewer with the licensing stripped off. If you wish to view and edit
output created in previous versions of SPSS, please install the Legacy Viewer
and open the older output using that application. Legacy Viewer is also available
for download from the SPSS Support website:
The web site can be found at http://support.spss.com/ProductsExt/SPSS/Documentation/Statistics/LegacyViewer/readme.html
For users of the SPSS Graduate Pack, Career Starter, and Faculty Pack products,
you can download the Legacy Viewer from the following location:
http://support.spss.com/newSupport/Student/Utilities/SPSS/index.html
There is no Legacy Viewer for old output (.spo) files for SPSS 16.0 for
Macintosh. There are no plans for one to be created. We must ask that you
regenerate your old output in the upgraded version. If you feel strongly about
having this for SPSS for Macintosh, please contact product marketing at
[hidden email]. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Problem
Subject: Where can I find the Legacy Viewer
(Smart Viewer 15.0) on the SPSS Statistics 17 CD?
Problem Description:
I have recently upgraded to SPSS Statistics 17 from a release prior to
SPSS 16. I have some Viewer *.spo files which I would like to open. I am on a
non-English interface and have clicked on Help - Topics - Index tab and have
entered the search keyword "spo".
The help page text on Non-English interface (e.g. German language) states that
the Legacy Viewer can be found on the Installation CD but this is not true.
When I switch to English language I can find this help page text:
"Opening Old Viewer (.spo) Files
Viewer files created in versions prior to release 16.0 cannot be opened in SPSS
Statistics 16.0 or later.
On Windows operating systems, you can install the SPSS Statistics 15.0 Smart
Viewer. For more information, go to http://www.spss.com/statistics.
However, when I click on this link I can not find the Legacy Viewer for
download.
Where can I find it?
Resolution Subject: The
Legacy Viewer is not included on the SPSS Statistics 17 CD.
Resolution Description:
The error in the help page text has been reported to SPSS Development .
The Legacy Viewer (Windows only) is available for download from the SPSS
Support website:
The web site can be found at http://support.spss.com/ProductsExt/SPSS/Documentation/Statistics/LegacyViewer/readme.html
It is also available on http://support.spss.comwhen
you click on SPSS - Utilities - SPSS for Windows - Legacy Viewer.
(You will need to enter your UserID and Password to access the Technical
Support Webpages.)
With the 17.0.2 Patch the help page text in the English version will be
directing to the first link mentioned above. The translated text for the
non-English interfaces will be changed with Statistics 18.

Subject: recognize output format
Hi,
I Have recently used spss version 17 rather slower than spss 15.
My question is spss 17 doesn't recognize spss version 15's output( *.spo). Is there anyway
to convert or read spo file in 17 version?
thanx for help.
