I believe that the SPSS 6 in question was the last release before
SPSS introduced the Viewer, and not the mid-1970s
release to which the old maroon manual is keyed.
To this day, there are SPSS users who run this release because
they had developed production jobs that post-processed
the output to extract what they needed.
