Hi David

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. You were spot on in identifying the problem. Indeed in my masterlist file 'final premise' had duplicates records and also should be the table dataset.

Once I corrected it - it works like whiz.

You have saved me heaps of time - otherwise I would have done it the long way - that is write recode syntax for every incident data file ( and I have so many !).

For the benefit of all members I am posting the correct syntax


DATASET ACTIVATE DataSet4.         -------   (masterlist premise file)
MATCH FILES /TABLE=*
  /FILE='DataSet7'                       ---------------- (my work file)
  /BY finalpremise.
EXECUTE.
