short question about format

Rodrigo Briceño
Dear all.  I use SPSS 15 in my ibm laptop (windows XP) but I noticed
something weird with the format assigned to numbers: I get commas
instead of dots for decimal points. The issue is that the control panel
in Windows XP has defined dots as decimal separator.

Some weeks ago I used the set locale function for reading some cyrillic
text and I changed after that for spanish again (Spanish_Spain.1252).

What can I do in order to see the numbers as I want? Thanks!

Re: short question about format

Peck, Jon
You will get the decimal symbol for whatever locale SPSS is running in.  Use SET LOCALE to specify the conventions for SPSS to use.  Once you have used SET LOCALE, that setting overrides the Windows Control Panel.  And the Spanish_spain decimal is a comma.

If you want, say, a Spanish locale but a period decimal, you could use
SET LOCALE='spanish_United States'.
or just use an English locale such as
SET LOCALE='english_United States'.

Alternatively, you can use DOT and COMMA formats on variables to force the decimal to appear as , or . respectively.  (The names may seem backwards, because these formats are named for the digit-grouping character, not the decimal.)
