simple pie question

bia-2
Hello everyone!
This may be one of the simplest questiones you hae
everreceived, but I am stuck with it, so please, help
me! I am recently using SPSS 15.0. version and I am
trying to get the elements of the legend of a pie
graph apear inside the slides, or at least linked to
them. How do I do that? I know how to do it in SPSS
10.0. but I just cannot find this option in SPSS 15.0.
Thank you!
Bia

Re: simple pie question

ViAnn Beadle
There are several ways to create pie charts and how you do this depends upon
how you create the chart in the first place. There are two different
technologies within 15 for producing charts and each has its own editor.

If you use IGRAPH command (Interactive>Pie) you can control the position of
the labels within slices using syntax. The SLICE=INSIDE on the PIE
subcommand will do it. But, you'll also want to delete the legend since it
is redundant. That has to be done in the IGRAPH editor:
1. double-click on the pie to open the editor
2. right-click on the legend to get the Hide context menu.

If you use the GRAPH (Legacy>Pie) or GGRAPH (Chart Builder) command, you'll
have to create your pie chart, and do ALL the editing within the Chart
editor which is not the same editor as used for the IGRAPH charts:
1. Double-click on the pie to open the chart editor.
2. From the Elements menu click on Show Labels.
3. The Data Value Labels tab is added to the Properties Window. There you
can turn on/off the value of the slice and/or the value of the Category. Hit
the Apply Button.
4. right-click on the legend to get the Hide Legend context menu.
5. If you want to save a chart template for use with future pies, click on
File>Save Template in the chart editor. Turn on the Data Labels and Legend
check boxes. The template can then be used in syntax or applied with the
chart editor to another pie.

You've asked a simple question which has a relatively complicated answer.
Things will be simpler in 16 since there is only one chart editor.

Re: simple pie question

ViAnn Beadle
You are right in that you can't display the variable labels as category
labels in charts created with the GRAPH command. But you should have no
problems at all in creating a pie chart with different variables using
IGRAPH. Use the /COMBINE subcommand. If you use the UI to create the chart,
drag your multiply-selected summary variables to the target value.

Thank you so much for your answer, though I am still
unable to solve my problem. Within the IGRAPH command,
I am not able to build a pie graph with different
variables as slices. As far as the legacy dialog
option, the only kind of labels that can be set inside
the slices, are the numeric ones, not the ones in the
legend. I'm not sure whether I have made myself clear.
I need to buid a chart with the following options:
the slices represent different variables (statistic=
sum) and the elements from the legend (that are
actually the variables lables in the database) are
inside the slices or at least connected to them.
If you know of any way to do this, I would very much
appreciate your help. Thank you!
