software problems

mhlamphear
Dear List,

I purchased the Grad Pack 11.0 for Mac OS X a few years back when I took my statistics course.  I did not have reason to use the program much after that course until now.  I am currently working on my dissertation, and need to reacquaint myself with SPSS.  However, I have not been able to open the program.  I am double clicking on the icon labeled "SPSS 11 for Mac OS X" and the icon appears and bounces on my program bar at the bottom of my screen, but nothing happens.  I ended up putting the folder containing all the SPSS files in the trash, and reinstalling the program.  A dialogue box appeared indicating that installation was successful, but again, the program does not open.

I read somewhere about Microsoft Office for Mac creating problems for SPSS.  Between my statistics course and now, I did install Microsoft Office 2004.  SPSS no longer provides support for my particular version.  I took my laptop to the Apple Store, and the folks at the "genius bar" were not able to figure it out.

Has anyone ever run into this problem, and if so, can you advise me?

Thanks so much,

Marjorie Lamphear

Hi Marjorie,

My understanding is that the Grad Pack is a limited license for only 3 or 4 years (I think it's 4 now but used to be 3?). So is it simply that your license has expired? I can't remember the exact years of release but I would guess that version 11 was at least that long ago.

In Windows an expired installation will launch but give you a pop up dialogue box that the processor is unable to continue, or something like that. But I do not know what Mac behaviour is for an expired license.

Kylie.

It's not Mac.  SPSS 11 is no longer supported.  I had it for five years, but when licence renewal time came up, SPSS couldn't or wouldn't supply a licence renewal code, so I had to have 15.  A later licence renewal resulted in 18, but 15 is still supported and many academic institutions are refusing to update because of the resulting disruption.  Many erstwhile colleagues are switching to Stata.  You could always try and wangle a discount for 18 or even enrol at a local academic institution and use theirs.

Re: software problems

Hi John,

I’m not sure what you mean by “it’s not Mac”. SPSS licenses on Mac expire and require renewing the same as Windows. However I am not familiar with the exact behaviour / messages that SPSS provides on Mac so I wasn’t able to say whether the behaviour that Marjorie describes is symptomatic of an expired license or not. While version 11 is of course no longer supported, if a perpetual license was purchased (for example, as you get with the Student Version), or a multi-year license like the Grad Pack, then the renewal and support issues that you describe don’t come into it.

Little solace for those of us who go through the license renewal and version updates on a yearly basis though!

Cheers,

Kylie.

Re: software problems

Muir Houston-2
the original poster states that they are doing a dissertation - in that case (I agree this is probably a licensing problem) the simplest solution would be to get another grad pack - our institution provides current students and staff with a yearly license for £10

however, this is for SPSS for windows so not sure if it would need an windows emulator on the Mac - someone lese will be able to comment on that

cheers

Thanks to all of you who offered thoughts and ideas regarding my question.  The licensing is something I will check into with the methods expert on my committee.  I am glad to know about this.

Sincerely,
Marjorie Lamphear
