Hi,
Does anyone else have any problems with SPSS 14.0.2 crashing without any warning when producing just a few bar charts via frequencies procedure for example? Doesn't happen to everyone but can happen intermittently on some PCs. I think it tends to happen more often that not when one starts producing graphs. We have a Novell network with SPSS 14.0.2 installed to hard disk. Also, have VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0 running. SPSS 14.02 patch applied locally onto hard disk via msiexec /i "<path>\SPSS1402ClientPatch.msi" /qn /L*V "<path>\SPSS1402Patch.Log" after 1401 was installed initially. Paul,
We are running SPSS 14.0.2 and have the same problem. It's very frustrating, but we haven't found a work around yet. Our problem started when they upgraded our computers to Windows XP professional. We didn't have the problem on Windows NT. I'm hoping that version 15.0 won't encounter the same problem. Allen Frommelt |
Allen,
We have windows XP SP2. Am partly tempted to go back to SPSS 12.02 which is what we previously had and was less prone to crashing. We have only just released SPSS 14.0.2 though on the network. I've run both the networked version (Novell, on our campus) and stand
alnoe. I have a had only a few intermittent crashes but but not nearly so many as before the latest patch. That said, I have started having several problems at home with several pieces of software (SPSS 15) included that I attribute to that damned latest upgrade (so called) from Microsoft. In fact, our network service on campus has blocked access tot he MS upgrade site altogether. You might check to see if the problem is not with SPSS but Windows. I've had Service Pack 2 for XP on my system from SPSS V13 onwards but
the crashes didn't start till 14 came along. I think they started with the 14.02 patch. The system they happen on is off the network for security reasons so there is no Novell involved. The errors I encountered have involved illegal instructions getting trapped by XP and also C++ runtime errors. Looks like buggy code and/or a rotten C++ compiler. Below is a quote from the Rationale for the ANSI C standard: "The Committee kept as a major goal to preserve the traditional spirit of C. There are many facets of the spirit of C, but the essence is a community sentiment of the underlying principles upon which the C language is based. Some of the facets of the spirit of C can be summarized in phrases like : -Trust the programmer. -Don't prevent the programmer from doing what needs to be done. " I think the results of adhering to this in the writing of software are obvious to everyone except C programmers :-[ Regards Adrian -- Adrian Barnett Senior Project Officer Ph: +61 8 82266615 Research, Analysis and Evaluation Fax: +61 8 82267088 Strategic Planning and Research Branch Policy and Intergovernment Relations Department of Health email: [hidden email] God is good but don't dance in a currach. - Irish proverb This e-mail may contain confidential information, which also may be legally privileged.
