It seems that SPSS 16 has changed the format for output files to
something called .spv, which I can't seem to open in SPSS 15, which will only open .spo files. There doesn't seem to be a way to get SPSS 16 to save output in the old format. Is there a way to open SPSS 16 output in older versions or is this just a preposterous oversight on SPSS's part? -G ===================== To manage your subscription to SPSSX-L, send a message to [hidden email] (not to SPSSX-L), with no body text except the command. Is the lack of either forwards OR backwards computability just a
marketing ploy to get everyone to upgrade or is there some technical reasoning behind it? I have Stata as well, and it doesn't seem to have this kind of issue. I was actually going to upgrade to 16, but since almost everyone I know still uses 15, I guess I won't bother. -Graham ViAnn Beadle wrote: > The format of SPSS output files has changed from release to release since > Release 7 and has never been backwardly compatible. > > -----Original Message----- > From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of > Graham Wright > Sent: Friday, January 25, 2008 7:32 AM > To: [hidden email] > Subject: spss 16 output > > It seems that SPSS 16 has changed the format for output files to > something called .spv, which I can't seem to open in SPSS 15, which will > only open .spo files. Graham,
Output files have never been backwards compatible, as newer versions may have technology in it that is not in older versions. If you need to share v16 output with colleagues on older versions of SPSS, you can export the output to PDF, Word or Excel. Regards. Most programs I know (even ones that don't cost thousands of dollars)
have an option to save files in older versions, and give you some "some features may not display/work correctly in the older version" message to account for technological innovations in the new one. Word 2007 for example. It doesn't seem like there has been a quantum leap in the capabilities of SPSS output, and if there has been the output I'm trying to view doesn't use it: I'm just trying to look at some crosstabs and regression models. It seems to me like there should be a "save as .spo" option. The backwards compatibility issue is something else entirely. There's no excuse for that in my book, not for a program like this. -Graham David Lindsay wrote: > You have no idea what hassle this causes me. The .spv change was announced in some of the documentation, such as the 'ReadMe' files. This is one of only a few instances where a total rebuild of the output engine has made it unable to open previous work. I have had the same problem on occasion with other software that goes through major overhauls. Those of us who have been Windows users since the times of 3.1, Workgroups, NT, etc. know this problem. Sadly, it is the price of progress. Our institution is giving students 15 OR 16 and it is causing me to teach students to drop and drag output to Word before they turn it in. Ahhh progress. *************************************************************************************************************************************************************** Mark A. When I spoke with SPSS, I found out that 'Old' Tables was still
available as of v15 and is actually installed as part of the basic installation. However, you need a separate (free) authorization code for it. You can get it from SPSS and then you'll need to re-run the Authorization Wizard. SPSS told me that they wanted to 'wean' users off 'Old' tables, so I guess at some point, they'll quit including 'Old'tables. I will miss it. The only part of 'old' tables I have never been able to replicate with
Custom tables is the 'Table of Frequencies' where lots of variables with the same possible values are all shown in a single table alongside each other, with only one set of value labels showing on the left. I always use GUI to generate the syntax for this as it is very useful output. Is there a way to do this using Custom Tables instead? Look at my post of last week (Constructing frequency tables for 5-point

I appreciate the difference between STATA output (rich text) and SPSS
(ruch structure). I like the new SPSS format, since it appears to be XML based. Having said that, it is also now available on multiple operating systems (Windows, Macintosh, and Linux). Why the key to my new car does not start my old car, I am still wondering....
