spss date variable

jimjohn
can someone plz help me with this short question:

i have a variable to represent date, and its in the following format: mm/dd/yyyy
my data is from aug 2006 till today
so whenever i sort by date, i get the following:
jan 2007 first then feb 2007 then march 2007 .... then july 2007 then aug 2006, then aug 2007 ....

how do i change this variable so that when i sort it, it sorts the dates correctly from beginning to end.

thx!

Is that variable actually in date format?  Doesn't sound like it.  If it
were, it'd sort correctly.
