$sysmis vs Sysmis vs Missing

When are the appropriate times to use $SYSMIS vs sysmis vs Missing.

 

For example …

 

Recode var1 (missing=0). /* This does work */

Recode var1 (sysmis=0). /* This does work */

Recode var1 ($sysmis=0). /* This does NOT work */

 

Recode var1 (0=missing). /* This does NOT work */

Recode var1 (0=$sysmis). /* This does NOT work */

Recode var1 (0=sysmis). /* This does work */

 

It also comes up on COMPUTE, IF, SELECT, etc.
