Hi Dan,
I split my file by gender first. Go to "Data" on the toolbar > "split file", select "organize output by groups", move "gender" across then click "OK". All analyses you do from this point onwards using this data file will be by gender. Remember to turn split file off before running your normal analyses though (just select "analyze all cases by group").
