Make sure you save your transformed file with a new name, otherwise you will lose your original data.  To avoid tears I always advise people to keep at least two copies of their original data on a removable medium or a remote server and also to save all the syntax used to create that and subsequent files.

Subject: Select if not permanent?

Hi,
I thought that if I used a select if statement WITHOUT  "temporary"
preceding it that the selection would be permanent.
I used the following syntax Select if (SIWkRating LE 5) AND (MD_SI_C LE
5) and did a crosstabs which showed I should have an n of 346. When I
ran a frequency for MD_SI_C the total was indeed 346. I closed SPSS and
have now reopened it and reran the frequency for MD_SI_C and the total n
is back to 482, the entire dataset.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Jan
