Dear listserv,

My organization is replacing existing printers with Canon ImageRunner Advance multifunction (MFP) printers. The MFPs are set for secure input only: when a user sends a document to a printer, s/he must scan an ID card at the MFP to print the document. The default setting is for two-sided printing. In other software programs (e.g. Word, Power Point), when we wish to print a one-sided document, we click the print icon or choose print from the menu, select the MFP, change the setting to one-sided printing and the machine prints a single-sided document. But in SPSS, we are unable to override the double-sided default setting. We change the finishing preference from double-sided to single-sided in page setup but when it is printed, the document is double-sided.

It seems a difference between SPSS and other software programs that matters here is that the print dialogue box in SPSS does not include a “properties” button; instead, the user must choose page setup to select desired properties, and then exit page setup to print. Unfortunately, when we exit page setup, the default setting for double-sided printing is restored. Interestingly, other settings that we change in page setup (e.g. orientation from portrait to landscape) hold when we send an SPSS Output file to the MFP;  it is only the double-sided print default that we cannot override.

One solution is to export the Output file to Word, change MFP default settings, and print. However, there are several members of our research group who prefer to print directly from SPSS. Any suggestions for manipulating print settings in SPSS so we can print a one-sided document when needed would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much,

Dawn
