Can I use the same control variable two times in a regression?

Hey,

I'm trying to test a simple model consisting of three layers

IV (Institutional environment) --> MV (Entrepreneurial Activity) --> DV (Economic Growth)

1. I figured that theoretically makes sense to control for "GDP per capita" in both relationships, that is between the IV and the MV and the MV and the DV. Can I just do this or do I get problems when I use the same control variable twice at different stages of the regression?
