LOGISTIC REGRESSION v GUI

For predicting a dichotomous or multiple-level variable using continuous and categorical variables, is CONTRAST (VAR)=Indicator required when using a SELECT function?

I too am working with various categorical and continuous variables in logistic regression and curious to transition out of the GUI. Does the LOGISTIC REGRESSION syntax create a preferred view, does it save time with dummy variables? Where is a good place to start.
