Not sure if I’ve got the right subject heading here (from Nabble) but just found an article on IRT which may be relevant.  Way outside my field (and original mailing therefore deleted) but it cropped up in the same list as one of my pages on www.academia.edu when someone searched for “4-point scale” on Google.
