The columns property affects the widths
for data display, but there is no way to preserve the Variable View column
widths as last set. The scripting apis provide access to the general
properties of the window, but that does not include the individual column
widths. You can add or suppress columns from the View menu, and that
sticks for the dataset.

If I swap the columns around
in the Data Editor, save and re-open, the display retais the new column
order. However if I adjust the column widths to see variable and
value labels in full, then save and re-open, the display defaults to narrow
columns again. Is there any way to save the Data Editor as last displayed?
