testing the adequacy of cluster solutions

E. Bernardo
Any ideas about testing the adequacy of cluster solutions?  Im doing cluster analysis with a combinations of categorical and continuous variables.

Thank you.

R: testing the adequacy of cluster solutions

Luca Meyer-3

Personally when I run two-level clustering procedure -- that is: hierarchical clustering to determine initial seeds for k-means procedures -- I prefer to test solutions over several samples and initial seeds.

We check clusters in a couple of ways--testing against a split half and using the cluster results in a discriminant analysis to see if it predicts the variables from which the clusters are derived--Here's a link to a memo on our process for clustering.
