trouble with syntax window in SPSS 18 for MAC

AFter years and years of using SPSS 11.5 I have installed SPSS 18 on a new MAC.  I can open a syntax window, but nothing seems to happen when I type and nothing happens when I paste from a dialog box.

Any suggestions?
