unnerving spss 23 oddity

Maguin, Eugene

So: v23.0.0.2.

On few occasions since 23 was installed and patched, I’ve noticed that either the syntax window or the data window will start scrolling down. It’s unstoppable until it stops. For instance, it just happened and I was selecting and deleting (“Clear”) some records (n=20-25) in the data window. The data window started scrolling and, simultaneously, the syntax window did the same. Don’t know whether others have seen this. I don’t recall seeing this on prior versions.

Hi Gene.  I've been using v23 (for Windoze) since Sept 2015, and have never seen the behavior you describe either with or without the patch to 23.0.0.2.

Prior to getting the 23.0.0.2 patch, I was having another problem.  After installing v23, my computer became incredibly sluggish, much like it would do if severely infected with malware.  After patching to 23.0.0.2 and restarting the computer, that problem was instantly gone.

Cheers,
Bruce

I have never seen this problem with Statistics, but once in a great while it has happened with other apps.  The windows are listening foe keyboard and mouse events, so if a device gets stuck and sends a constant stream of events, something like that could happen.

This is possibly linked to the reason pointed out by Jon, and is that if you are using a wireless mouse, and the battery is dying, this will happen.  Has happened with me often and is exactly as if a button or key is depressed unwittingly – the entire business scrolls like the system is possessed ;)

“… like a system possessed.” Well described! But, in my case, the mouse has a tail. Gene Maguin
