I have found a kludge to create a break in the Y-axis of a line chart.
This worked in v16, I do not have older versions installed but this may
work in some of them.
There may be a more elegant way but this finally worked.
I have a Y axis in percentage points up to 5%. I had to show that the
axis goes to 100%. You can adapt this to match your situation by using
different contents where I used 100% and 99%.
1) get the chart however you are accustomed to.
2) double click the chart editor.
3)click the Y icon set the Y axis to 3 more intervals (major ticks) than
it now has. It this case percentages were set for ticks at 1 percentage
point from zero to 5. So I set it to 8.
4) right click outside the data area, click <chart size>, and uncheck
"maintain aspect ratio". Then make the graphic taller.
5) create a text box with "100%" as the text. Make its fill match your
background. I used white. Make the font the same as the other tick
labels.
6) create a text box with "99%" as the text . Make its fill match
your background. Make the font the same as the other tick labels.
7) create a text box with "tilde, new line, tilde". (~ enter ~). Make
its fill match your background. Use a large bold font. I used 28 point.
8) Position the 2 text boxes for 100% and 99% over the labels for the
axis ticks being careful not to hide the tick.
9) Position the text box the indicates the break over the label, the
tick, and the line for the left edge of the data area.
I could not get the 4 way arrow to stay visible, so I played with the
markers at the four sides of the text box.
If I wanted to move the whole box to the left, I pulled the left marker
to the left, and then the right marker to the left. This could take
several moves.
If I wanted to move the whole box up, I pulled the top marker up, and
then the bottom marker up. This could take several moves.
etc.
