Dear SPSS listers. I just received some data files from Vietnam that
comes with some vietnamese characters inside.
I have windows XP and SPSS 17. In SPSS17 I went to edit-options-general and checked unicode (universal character set) but the characters are still messy (my SPSS is based on English language). My question is: do I have to change something at regional options of windows to be able to read the text-characters properly? Example of what I'm seeing: tr¹m ytÕ x· PTT A Tr¹m ytÕ X· VP§ tr¹m y tÕ long ®iÒn y tÕ x· hng thµnh y tÕ x· vÜnh hng Thanks for your inputs! --

It looks like you have a sav file that does not have an encoding
recorded in it. With v15 or later, the encoding is recorded. So try changing your SPSS locale to Vietnamese and then opening
the data file. Stay in Unicode mode, though. HTH, Jon Peck From: SPSSX(r) Discussion
