You want to change the "columns" field, not "width".

Subject: "width" in variable view not working?
I created a number of variable but am finding that they are hard to read
unless I manually expand the width of the column. I thought that if i
changed the number in the "width" button in the variable view ti would do
tis automatically. I change the number from 9 to 11 but the column width
stays the same am I doing something wrong?
