Or, phrased in a different way, when will renewal licenses for SPSS 15
stop being supplied? This is, obviously, a question directed to any spss-dot-com people that might be reading it. For a European University teacher, as I am, in the middle of the adaptation to Bologna process (see link below), that causes a major restructuring of the courses I'm involved in, it is an important question. Last time I was caught in the middle of a forced update (from SPSS 13 to SPSS 15, due to SPSS 13 "death"), I spent a hectic month modifying every single screen shot inside my many books that was different between versions (a lot, I can assure). This was aggravated by the fact that our transition to SPSS 15 was delayed until early September, because our local SPSS representative took almost a month to deliver the new version (I had even to ask Hector Maletta's help to get a screen shot I badly needed and couldn't get, because I had SPSS 15 beta in English, and the screen shot had to be in Spanish). I distinctly remember that the number of white hairs sprouting from my head had increased exponentially by the end of the month. This year, I'm planning my summer work with a lot of time, because with the Bologna process affecting a lot of courses of mine (some are being duplicated while both plans, the old one and Bologna, coexist, with courses similar in content, but with different length, topics, scheduled for different terms...). So far, I have been almost drowned by paperwork (the teaching guides, description of the topics covered, detailed timetables...).If I have to move from SPSS 15 to PASW 17 before September 1st, I'd rather know NOW, to have time to adapt old books while writing the new ones, although I'm afraid that the old computers used for teaching will not be able to cope with PASW 17 (I tested it on a 2 GHz processor, 1 Gb RAM, Windows XP SP3 and it definitely crawled...). I REALLY hope that I'll still have SPSS 15 for one more year, until the worst of the adaptation to new teaching plans, with new courses... is over. That will also give time to renew the computers (there are plans for that, I have been told). Hoping I will not have to say goodbye to SPSS 15 yet... SPSS 13 support ended when I was beta testing SPSS 15, and since it looks that PASW 18 is on its way, I thought history would repeat itself. > However, I'm told that you should contact your Account Manager on the issue of possible license renewals for Release 15 if you really want to use it for another year, as that decision is a sales one rather than a Technical Support decision. > Last time they were adamant and flatly refused to do so. Can I use your name when I talk to them this year? (just kidding...). Anyway, thanks for the information, I'll start working on that, to see if I can get SPSS 15 licenses for one more year. It will save me (and other teachers at the university) a lot of work. besides, I have been in contact with SPSS/PASW 17 since I beta tested it, but I don't think any other teacher has even had a glimpse of it. Marta,
I sympathize with you completely. One suggestion that I think is a reasonable request; why can't SPSS renew ALL previously functioning licenses for users who have purchased the latest version of the software. For instance if I have previously bought licenses for v.15 or 16 and renew the license for the current version (PASW 17.02), then these previous licesnses are still functioinal on the previous versions. It would certainly make many of our lives easier and create .much needed positive regard for the company. I have several students who have found that the hardware limitations of their laptop PCs make running 17.0 cumbersome and often problematic and they preferred v. 15.0. My students are MD fellows in the Dept. of OB/GYN and don't have a lot of time to waste debugging software problems. As a matter of fact, we are considering moving to STATA fror a variety of reasons. The renewal problem being one of them. Michael,
I couldn't agree more. My work has a perpetual licence for v.11 but we lost the CD and were unable to move the files to a new computer. Attempts to obtain a copy from SPSS have been absolutely unsuccessful. regards Bob 09:45 PM 16/05/2009, Michael Kruger wrote: >Marta, > > > I sympathize with you completely. One suggestion that I think is a >reasonable request; why can't SPSS renew ALL previously functioning >licenses for users who have purchased the latest version of the >software. Michael,
I would strongly encourage the move to Stata: perpetual license that doesn't require renewal, outstanding tech support, extremely active users group on Statalist, and well-suited for biostatistical applications. And Wayne State University (where you're located) now offers it with the university discount.
