Accessing SPSS from off site?

Rose, Fred
Accessing SPSS from off site? My college has a site license for SPSS but several of our adjunct instructors, who use their personal laptops for instruction, need to access spss for their classes.  The site license prohibits installing SPSS on personal computers (i.e., computers not owned by the college). We are therefore trying to see if it is possible to access SPSS from offsite via VPN or some other protocol/procedure.  Our IT people weren’t sure how to do this so I’m wondering if anyone here knows whether it is possible and how this might be done?  We are, of course, looking for legal methods – not trying to get around any licensing restrictions. The thinking is that if the software is physically housed on and using the processor of a campus computer we would be operating within the bounds of the license.  Our thinking may be flawed, but that’s why we are asking!

Back channel replies are fine.  Thank you,

We are using SPSS commuter licenses. On our license server we have marked one third of licenses to be available for "travelling licenses" (run "licensecommute.jar" on the client computer) up to 7 days. This works fine for more than 10 years now and is an outstanding property of SPSS! We have license servers for several software products and none of the other ones is capable to detach a license for some days.

In case of forgetting to obtain a license I'm connecting to the University Department via VPN which works fine.

Cheers

Andreas

This is very useful information on accessing software from offsite. Last month, I signed up with one of best windows vpn service provider and they gave free server software which helped me in accessing all the computers.
