Add a preceding 0 to numerical variable

I need to add a preceding 0 to a numerical id variable. Is there a way to do this and keep the 0 as part of the variable?

Format the variable with leading zeros.

format id (n8).

If the variable id is of 7 digits length, it will be formatted beginning with 0.
