Cannot install SPSS 11.0 into Windows Vista Home Basic

Yip Cheung
Hello support team,

I am a student using Windows Student Version for SPSS 11.0 into Windows Vista Home Basic. However, the program aborts me from installation and gives me a signal "Single-user licences cannot be installed on servers running NT Terminal Server"..

Please kindly advise me how to fix this and install the valueable SPSS 11.0 programe to my new computer successfully.

Best regards,

Re: **SPAM** Cannot install SPSS 11.0 into Windows Vista Home Basic (Note X-RBL-Warning)

Lemon, John S.
As far as I know only SPSS 16 is certified for Vista, SPSS 15 can be installed on Vista but it needs a 'HotFix' to work. As SPSS 11 predates Vista by many years it is highly unlikely that it will work - I'm afraid you will have to update.

Best Wishes

Hi Yip,

I also had the problem and since the solution was not-quite-trivial, I though it would be a good idea to post it for others to find instead of just e-mailing you.

It is somewhat of an ugly kludge but I managed to find out why SPSS determines that Vista was an NT Terminal Server (while XP is not) - it does so by checking a registry entry under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptions (one that simply reads "Terminal Server", btw).
By making sure your user doesn't have permission to read the entry the problem is circumvented (I checked 'Deny read permission' for my specific userid on the key).
Note that you will need to do that on a permanent basis (SPSS checks that key whenever it is started) - I do not think this will have any harmful effects, but if it does you can always undo it and create an SPSS user.

Hope this helps you (and maybe someone else down the road) - like you I see little reason to upgrade from SPSS 11 especially since it appears to be perfectly functional under vista (although I only did very light testing).

I just have to say to ANYONE out there trying to install SPSS onto a VISTA Operating System...
I am eternally grateful to Eyal below for helping me!  I accidentally ran across this post...AND...it WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!!  It took me a little while to find the actual registry entry, but doggone it, I've now got SPSS on my Vista system!  PERFECTION!

You rock!

Oh my gosh, I am having the exact same problem with SPSS on VISTA.  Where is the actual registry entry?  I can't find it!!  Do you remember how you got there/have the time to explain it to me?

Re: Cannot install SPSS 11.0 into Windows Vista Home Basic

Okay, here's how I found it:

Go to:  "Run"
Type: msconfig
A System Configuration screen will open

Go to the "TOOLS" tab...
Scroll down to where you see the "Registery Editor"

Click "Open" when you're prompted...and a NEW window will open (which is the entire registry of the computer)

Now...this is the tricky part...

You'll be looking for this menu tree:

Computer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
then SYSTEM
then CURRENTCONTROLSET
then CONTROL
then scroll down until you see TERMINAL SERVER (which is the same as HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptions

Just like Eyal says below, you are looking for this:  HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptions (BUT...it's actually called "terminal server" not really "productoptions)

Then delete the "terminal server" registry key.

THEN, you need to do the same for the USER (vs. LOCAL MACHINE)...this way they will both be off.  The terminal server pretends to be a "host"...if you turn it off or remove this registry entry, the entire thing works like a charm!  I was blown away!

Ermon / Eyal, excellent work my man!  I will paypal you $5 if you can explain to me how you figured out that you needed to change that registry key.

Thanks!
