I apologize if this is basic question, however, I have done quite a bit of searching and was hoping to be able to change the style of font using syntax (for the syntax editor) as opposed to in the GUI. Does anyone know how this could be done? Thanks, Derek |

If you want to change the font style in
pivot table output, use the GUI to define a TableLook with the font characteristics
you want. Then use SET TLOOK in command syntax to set that TableLook.
You can find information on creating TableLooks here: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSLVMB_23.0.0/spss/base/table_look_edit_howto.dita?lang=en You can find information on SET TLOOK here: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSLVMB_23.0.0/spss/base/syn_set_tlook_ctemplate.dita?lang=en You may notice in that topic that you can also assign chart templates in command syntax; so you can also control the attributes of charts via syntax. Thanks for the quick responses everyone. I was hoping to change the font using syntax. For example, something along the lines of CHANGE font /monospace. Derek, in the GUI chose View -> Fonts and change according to your preferences. This changes your syntax font. Are you talking about fonts in the Output window, or the font that appears in the syntax editor? Rick's reply assumed the former, but I am beginning to wonder if you meant the latter.

Why? Why not just use the GUI?
The font characteristics of a file displayed in the syntax editor are characteristics of the syntax editor, not characteristics of the file. No font information is saved in the syntax files. How/Why would this even be useful?
Isn't Alt-V-F a bit faster than any syntax you would have to type even if such were possible? I don't believe there is (ie there isn't) any SET command to control this. *Maybe* there is a registry key which you could hack if you know what you are doing (but you are on your own with that one -I don't do that for free- and it would hardly be practical for Alt_V-F reasons). --
Please reply to the list and not to my personal email.

I don't pretend to understand why the OP wants to be able
to change the font in the syntax editor via a syntax command but it does remind of the distinction between editors as represented by Notepad (which appears to keep all text in a single font) and Wordpad (which allows a combination of fonts in a single file). In the old days, when word or text processing involved inserting "formatting commands" (e.g., in Unix, for troff/psroff, /f2-/f1 would italicize the text betwee the font change slash commands), this would result in output that had a mixture of fonts (or variations of a font such as italic, bold, and underline). But the editor contained these commands and did not alter how the text looked within the editor. The benefit was that the file could be just plain text using whatever the default font was (meaning that any ordinary text editor could read the file). With the the development of "What You See Is What You Get" or WYSIWYG, the font change commands are still present but they are now interpreted to produce output in the editor that contains the different fonts and variations, as can be done in Wordpad (though one no longer inserts text change commands, they are specific in the GUI or menus). It seems to me that the OP might want to use something like Wordpad as an alternative syntax editor to the standard syntax editor. One problem I see here is how does SPSS handles the now hidden font change command -- in Unix one might use deroff to remove text formatting commands and produce a plain text file. I don't know but I do not think SPSS has such a capability. In the past, SPSS allowed the use of alternative editors for editing syntax files (see the Olde SPSS FAQ and the entry "How do I go about using an alternative syntax editor" that uses a utility developed by Tom Dierickx; see: http://pages.infinit.net/rlevesqu/FAQ.htm#AlternativeEditor near the bottom of the page ). Using an alternative editor was possible in old versions of SPSS but I don't think it is still possible to do so. If it is possible, that might provide the solution that the OP is looking for. -Mike Palij New York University [hidden email] ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Marso" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Friday, August 28, 2015 9:46 AM Subject: Re: Changing font in SPSS using syntax > How/Why would this even be useful? > Isn't Alt-V-F > a bit faster than any syntax you would have to type even if such were > possible? > I don't believe there is (ie there isn't) any SET command to control > this. > *Maybe* there is a registry key which you could hack if you know what > you > are doing > (but you are on your own with that one -I don't do that for free- > and it would hardly be practical for Alt_V-F reasons). > -- > > dmracek23 wrote >> Hi Bruce, >> >> I am looking to change the font of the syntax editor using syntax (if >> that >> makes sense). >> >> Thanks, >> >> Derek >> >> On Thu, Aug 27, 2015 at 10:53 AM, Bruce Weaver < > >> bruce.weaver@ > >> > >> wrote: >> >>> Are you talking about fonts in the Output window, or the font that >>> appears >>> in >>> the syntax editor? Good to know my ESPss was working. But like David, I'm puzzled about how/where/why this would be useful. The only thing that occurs to me is that you are giving syntax files to other people, and trying to force them to view in a font of your choosing. But if they don't like that font, they can easily change it back to one they do like (ALT-V-F, as David says). So what's the point?

A syntax file is just a text file. As far
as I know, you can create and edit it in any text editor you want, as long
as that text editor has the ability to save a file as plain text.
The syntax editor uses font characteristics to distinguish different elements of the command structure and to highlight incomplete commands or expressions. Font settings in the syntax editor are properties of the syntax editor, and they are global. You cannot selectively apply different fonts to different parts of the file, and no font characteristics are saved with the file. Bruce, You nailed it. I have an INSERT FILE that links to a macro. Within the macro I have some rudimentary ASCII art which only makes sense in monospace (consistently spaced font [equally spaced characters]). Ideally, within the macro at the beginning I'd like to switch to monospace and then at the end of the macro switch back to (for example) courier. Doesn't sound like it can be done though. You can change the display font used in
the syntax editor. You can also change the font colors and styles used
to distinguish various components of the command structure. This has no
effect on the actual file. None of the font characteristics you see in
the syntax editor are saved with the file.

As far as I know, you can create and edit it in any text editor you want, as long as that text editor has the ability to save a file as plain text. Rick Oliver Senior Information Developer IBM Business Analytics (SPSS) E-mail: [hidden email] From: Mike Palij <[hidden email]> To: [hidden email] Date: 08/28/2015 09:42 AM Subject: Re: Changing font in SPSS using syntax Sent by: "SPSSX(r) Discussion" <[hidden email]> I don't pretend to understand why the OP wants to be able to change the font in the syntax editor via a syntax command but it does remind of the distinction between editors as represented by Notepad (which appears to keep all text in a single font) and Wordpad (which allows a combination of fonts in a single file). Well …, why not put artwork in a syntax file! It’s all a comment. But, why not set the default syntax editor font to be either new courier or that funny monospace font spss uses and which I don’t understand why it is needed.
Doesn’t that solve the problem? Gene Maguin From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]]
On Behalf Of dmracek23 . Bruce, You nailed it. I have an INSERT FILE that links to a macro. Within the macro I have some rudimentary ASCII art which only makes sense in monospace (consistently spaced font [equally spaced characters]). Ideally, within the macro at the
beginning I'd like to switch to monospace and then at the end of the macro switch back to (for example) courier. Doesn't sound like it can be done though. Derek On Fri, Aug 28, 2015 at 10:47 AM, Bruce Weaver <[hidden email]> wrote:

Eugene, Thanks for your response. Your suggestion would work for my use, however, I'm trying to sell my internal customers on using the macro that I have developed as such their default font wouldn't be monospace. I figured incorporating some of our organizational artifacts (vis-a-vis the ASCII artwork) into the syntax stakeholders would be more likely to use it. That is all.
