Dear Friends,
I was given a project with an N=26 that has 28 outcome variables and three stress variables (explanatory). I'm not able to touch the outcome variables, but I will be able combine the three stress variables; here is where I need help. The correlations between these variables are: 1 & 2 = .456; 1 & 3 = .157; and 2 & 3 = -.077. Equal unit weighting doesn't appear to be a good idea. I generated a component score using PC. However, I'm not sure if there is a better way of combining these measures. Any suggestions (and or references) will be most welcome. TIA. All,
I just got 16 installed and while I'm certainly not looking forward to it, there's no choice for site licenses. My question: in the program listing, there used to be an entry for 'production facility'. There is not now on my installation. The only entry is for 'license authorization wizard'. I'm assuming the production facilty hasn't been done away with so how do I now access it? After looking at the so-called legacy viewer, I noticed that the export feature has been stripped out. This seems like a rather stupid decision as I can easily see needing to export chunks of 15 output to a text file. The other odd thing is why the legacy viewer was not incorporated into the 16 file open output. I don't know anything about the underlying code but it would seem to be trivial in difficulty. Probably both decisions were driven by marketing. I'm guessing that 17 is either in production release or late beta. So, I'm curious, does 17 support 15 and before output files? Does anybody know what could account for this - when double-clicking a
production file (*.spj) or running one via schedule, SPSS will launch but the file won't execute. (?) Here's the syntax file the production job comprises: * test production job *. data list free /v1 v2. begin data 1 1 2 2 3 3 end data. save outfile = 'c:\temp\production job test.sav'. SPSS owns it but doesn't execute it. To execute it you have to run it from
the command line using the appropriate command line parameters or wrap it in a bat file containing the command line. -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Hal 9000 Sent: Friday, September 05, 2008 3:38 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: Question on 16: production facility Does anybody know what could account for this - when double-clicking a production file (*.spj) or running one via schedule, SPSS will launch but the file won't execute. Dear Stephen
If the variables can be considered 'formative' indicators you can sum them to form a scale without worrying about the correlations between them. For example if the variables measured stress coming from independent sources (eg work, family) you would not necessarily expect them to be correlated, and you could add them to get a 'total' stress. The legitimacy of this procedure rests on substantive rather than statistical considerations, and needs to be based on your understanding of the content area, & how the questions are worded etc. Regards Garry Gelade -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Salbod, Mr. Stephen Sent: 05 September 2008 15:06 To: [hidden email] Subject: Combining variables Dear Friends, I was given a project with an N=26 that has 28 outcome variables and three stress variables (explanatory).
