Command Question

David Thompson
Colleagues:

What is the opposite of the LAG function?

I want to select a case if the NEXT value of a variable satisfies a condition, rather than the PREVIOUS value of the variable.

Happy Holidays!

David

Automatic reply: Command Question

MICHAEL J TONER

Hello,

Temple University will be closed from the close of business on Friday, December 21, 2012 until Wednesday, January 2, 2013. I will be out of the office until Monday, January 7, 2013, but I will check my email periodically during the winter break and my time away.

If you are an applicant to a Temple graduate program and have a question about the status of your application, you should contact the department to which you applied. The department has your application file and is responsible for processing your application and making the admissions decision. If you contact the department, someone from their staff will respond to your inquiry when Temple reopens in January.

During the break, I will only respond to problems with the online application system. I will not respond to questions about one's application status, nor will I be able to do anything about registration issues. These matters will be handled when Temple reopens in January.

A link to the Graduate Bulletin, which has information on all of our graduate programs, is here: http://www.temple.edu/gradbulletin/alphaindex.htm

If you are an undergraduate applicant, someone from Undergraduate Admissions will respond to you when Temple reopens in January.

If you are having an issue with the TUportal, please contact our Help Desk ([hidden email]).

Best,

Michael Toner

The SHIFT VALUES command is newer and more all-round, and it preserves user-missing values (unlike CREATE).
Too bad that both CREATE and SHIFT VALUES require a data pass. I rarely need a lead variable, but because
it doesn't require a data pass I always use LAG, not SHIFT VALUES to create lag variables. But of course SORT is crucial for LAG.

You could sort the data in descending order to create a LEAD with LAG. Danger with LAG: MISSING VALUES calls. Use EXECUTE
if you're not sure! This causes faults, not errors, ergo quite sneaky.
