Configuring "Open File"

Gary Stevens-2
Can SPSS 14 be configured to open to a desired folder instead of Program
Files/SPSS?
Many Thanks.

If you want to have SPSS start in a folder different from the installation directory (which would be a good idea), the easiest way to do this is to create a desktop shortcut and specify the working directory there.

Right click on the desktop and choose New>shortcut.
Type in c:\program files\spss\spsswin.exe  (or wherever SPSS is installed).
Press Next and enter a name.  Then press Finish
Now, here is the weird part.
Right click on your new shortcut and choose Properties.  You will see a field labeled Start in:
Enter the directory you want for your initial working directory and press ok.

Then just use that to start SPSS.

Hi

If you are using syntax, you can just double-click on the syntax file.
If you have many syntax files in multiple directories, this is
definitely the easiest way.  I often run SPSS from multiple directories
in a day.

Cheers

Frank

You needn't create a shortcut. Going to Start -> Programs -> SPSS for
Windows -> SPSS 13 for Windows, and RIGHT clicking over this last will
give you access to Properties, where you can change, as Jon
 indicated, the Start folder.

(Hoping this message will not be rejected as either SPAM or Duplicate
(?) posting, there is something strange going on in this list lately,
at least with my messages).

Re: Configuring "Open File"

True.  The menu and the desktop shortcut both have, underneath, the same set of properties.  However, you can create as many desktop shortcuts as  you need, so, for example, you could create a different one for each project.  Equivalently, you could create as many menu items for SPSS (or other programs) as you want.

Or you could unclutter your life by deleting ALL the menu items and doing everything from the Run menu :-)
