All,
I have had several students ask me for a flow sheet of some sort to help them decide on which statistical test to use under what data conditions. I know I have seen these in various text books but I'd like to know if any of you have something like this that you would be willing to share? Any help or ideas is much appreciated. Don't use such things.
Flow charts resemble learning tools but in most cases they will turn into a crutch. People who are using flow charts are using statistics as magical incantations without any understanding. If folks are unable to select the right procedure(s) for their needs they should start by contacting someone who can help them not only select the correct procedures, but explain why those would be the correct procedure(s). Hi Michael
I think you are overlooking the learning potential of such flowcharts. From my experience (personal and an observer) when the user thinks about the "starting factors" described and the decision points in a flow-chart it opens up some broader considerations. I agree the brevity of the flowchart omits the conditions and assumptions of the test. But this is also a criticism of many textbooks. Many people do not have ready access to a stats expert willing to help them with their stats queries gratis. Tony,
I don't have a flow chart, but check out the Statistics Coach in SPSS see if it helps. In SPSS, go to Help>Statistics Coach. Hi Tony,
Andy Field's book, Discovering Statistics Using SPSS (2ne ed), has a nice flowchart just inside the back cover. It starts with the number of outcome variables, whether they are continuous or categorical and, after a series of steps, provides the appropriate test. Hi
I don't think flow charts are THAT bad, at least for students, provided they have the knowledge to fill the gaps that flowcharts have (since they are bit laconic) I have written one for my students (they use it with SPSS, and after a lot of theory has been "pumped" into their brains), but it's in Spanish, sorry. If you give me a couple of days, I can translate it. It fits in one A4 sheet, and covers uni & bivariate methods (from t-test&ANOVA to simple linear regression, including goodness of fit & contingency tests) both parametric and non parametric. In the meantime, you can take a look at these two links: - Statistics at Square One: Study design and choosing a statistical test http://www.bmj.com/collections/statsbk/13.dtl It has a summary table at the end of the chapter with a list of statistical methods and their purpose - How to read a paper: Statistics for the non-statistician. I: Different types of data need different statistical tests http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/315/7104/364 There is nice table (table 1) with a summary of commonly used statistical tests with an example: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content-nw/full/315/7104/364/T1 HTH, Marta García-Granero > > >>> -----Original Message----- >>> From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] >>> On Behalf Of Granaas, Michael >>> Sent: Friday, April 04, 2008 1:08 AM >>> To: [hidden email] >>> Subject: Re: Decision rules for stat tests >>> >>> Don't use such things. >>> >>> Flow charts resemble learning tools but in most cases they >>> will turn into a crutch. Hi,
It didn't take that long to translate my flowchart, after all. I need that someone offers hosting for the document, because the only hosting space I have at the university is in an intranet, available ony for my students. I can also send it to you privately, but I though the flowchart might be of interest to other people, but I don't exactly feel like getting a lndslide of mails requesting it, and having to send it again and again, as it has happened to me before with other files I offered to the list. Besides, I would like it to be reviewed (and criticized) by as many people as possible, in order to improve it. Regards, Marta > I have had several students ask me for a flow sheet of some sort to help > them decide on which statistical test to use under what data conditions. > I know I have seen these in various text books but I'd like to know if > any of you have something like this that you would be willing to share? > > > Any help or ideas is much appreciated. > ===================== To manage your subscription to SPSSX-L, send a message to [hidden email] (not to SPSSX-L), with no body text except the command.
