So, I'm curious ... A question for 17 users who, I assume, used to be 16
users last year. 'Log' objects in the 16 output window are displayed so that
spaces as represented as 'square' symbols. I think the output display with
these symbols is extremely hard to read. Spss obviously disagreed or they
wouldn't be there. On 17 are these square symbols still displayed in the
output?

I never saw squares which usually mean that some characters are missing from
the local code page in 16.

Actually, the default font for log items in the Viewer does not show square boxes.  If you change to a font that does not support all the characters in the log, however, those characters will appear as square boxes.  The font is trying to tell you it doesn't know how to display those characters.

Now the surprise is that you didn't think you had any such characters.  The problem was that in attempting to use a fixed-pitch font in certain text places, we found that on some platforms, fixed-pitch fonts were not entirely fixed pitch regarding the blank.  So we chose to use the Figure Space character, which is defined as a fixed width blank.  Unfortunately, some fonts don't recognize this character (Unicode character 2006, if memory serves), so the font falls back to the square box.

We stopped doing this because of this problem, but, again, if you stick with the default font setting shipped with SPSS, you shouldn't have this problem.

HTH,
Jon Peck

(simple) Python question

Albert-Jan Roskam
In reply to this post by Maguin, Eugene
Hi,

In the Python/Spss function fragment below I use SUMMARIZE to give a summary for unweighted and weighted data, respectively. It works for any number of 'by' variables.

The title of the SUMMARY is filled in with the getShow information. It works, but why do I need to make another instance of cmd and lbl? It's kinda ugly to repeat the code of cmd and lbl, but if I don't the 'unweighted' label is shown even when the data are weighted. Is there a more conscise way of doing this?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers!!
Albert-Jan

lbl = spssaux.getShow("weight")
cmd = ["summarize dummy "] + [" by " + var for var in by_var.split()] + [" / cells = count npct / title = ' %(lbl)s'." % locals() ]

spss.Submit(cmd)

cmd2 = ["temporary.", "weight by std_weight."]
spss.Submit(cmd2)
lbl = spssaux.getShow("weight")
cmd = ["summarize dummy "] + [" by " + var for var in by_var.split()] + [" / cells = count npct / title = ' %(lbl)s'." % locals() ]
spss.Submit(cmd)

I saw this in 16 too.  I switched from Time New Roman (which didn't work) for the titles and text output to SansSerif for the titles and Monospaced for the Text Output.  Those fonts do work without the boxes.  I did notice that if I opened the object for editing, SOMETIMES the 'boxes' went away.  I fixed it with the above change before figuring out why it did that.

Re: Font for SPSS 17 Syntax editor

John,

Thank you for the explanation. I did, in fact, immediately change the
defaults and saw that the new default for log items in the viewer was
'monospaced' instead of the 'new courier' that it was in 15. I like new
courier because it is easy to read and is (or maybe I just thought it was) a
fixed pitch font, which is handy for other things. So I changed it to what I
liked. I understand how to fix the problem now. I also see that I didn't
give a good accounting of the problem because I forgot some elements.

>>Now the surprise is that you didn't think you had any such characters.
The problem was that in attempting to use a fixed-pitch font in certain text
places, we found that on some platforms, fixed-pitch fonts were not entirely
fixed pitch regarding the blank.

I'm now curious about is why this issue appears now and did not on 15. But,
you don't have to give an answer.

The problem with blanks not always being fixed size was always there but was more prevalent on certain platforms.  In trying to fix it while also ensuring that default fonts would work with any characters in the world, we introduced the new problem.  All should be fine in 17.
