HSB Data

dcnnvtr

Hi list-

Does anybody know where I can download the HSB (High School and Beyond) data? I want to try some multi-level modeling in SPSS and follow along with a research paper I downloaded ("Estimating Multilevel Models using SPSS, Stata and SAS", Jeremy J. Albright, May 11, 2007).

Thanks!
J

Dear J,

This is a recurring problem.  The HsbData.sav file was used in many  SPSS guides, but is hard to come by now unless you have a CD-ROM that came with the publication.  Have you tried writing to the authors to ask for the file?

For what it is worth, you can acess the source data from the High School and Beyond study in two ways (although this would not be as handy as using the same file that the authors use).  The original HSB study is available on CD ROM from the National Center on Educational Statistics:

http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/getpubcats.asp?sid=022#

If you have access to the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Reseach, you can download the original data from here:

Good Luck,

Stephen Brand

Albright says he used the HSB data set that accompanies the HLM package, so you might considering downloading the student version of HLM (which is free) because the HSB data set comes with it.
