Dear expert lister,
I have a datafile like, DATA LIST LIST /id r1 r2 r3 r4 r5 r6 r7 r8 r9 r10. BEGIN DATA. 1 1 . . . . . 1. 1. 2 . 1 1 1 . . . . .. 3 . . . . 1 1 1 . .. END DATA. LIST. I need to convert this data in SPSS like : DATA LIST LIST /id c1 c2 c3 . BEGIN DATA. 1 1 7 9 2 2 3 4 3 5 6 7 END DATA. LIST. i.e. in the given datafile first record has respose coded 1 in r1,r7, r9 ;I need to convert this data like c1 should have respose coded 1,c2 have response coded 7 and c3 have response coded 9. Any quick help will be highly appreciated. Thanks! Abdus. --------------------------------- Get easy, one-click access to your favorites. Here is the a syntax to do what you need . DATA LIST LIST /id r1 r2 r3 r4 r5 r6 r7 r8 r9 r10. BEGIN DATA. 1 1 . . . . . 1 . 1 . 2 . 1 1 1 . . . . . . 3 . . . . 1 1 1 . . . END DATA. numeric pos1 to pos10 . vector r=r1 to r10 . vector pos=pos1 to pos10 . compute j=0 . loop i=1 to 10. if r(i) eq 1 j=j+1. if r(i) eq 1 pos(j)=i . end loop . list id pos1 to pos4 . execute . Hi Abdus:
See if this helps you: * Your dataset *. DATA LIST LIST /id r1 r2 r3 r4 r5 r6 r7 r8 r9 r10 . BEGIN DATA. 1 1 . . . . . 1 . 1 . 2 . 1 1 1 . . . . . . 3 . . . . 1 1 1 . . . END DATA. LIST. TEMPORARY. Dear Abdus,
Here is a simpler(with Marta's permission, of course! ;-)) solution without the need to use MATRIX: DATA LIST LIST /id r1 r2 r3 r4 r5 r6 r7 r8 r9 r10. BEGIN DATA. 1 1 . . . . . 1 . 1 . 2 . 1 1 1 . . . . . . 3 . . . . 1 1 1 . . . END DATA. LIST. FORMATS id TO r10 (F3). VARIABLE WIDTH id TO r10 (3). VECTOR r = r1 TO r10 /pos(10 F3). LOOP #i = 1 to 10. + IF r(#i) EQ 1 pos(#i)=#i. END LOOP. NUMERIC c1 c2 c3 (F3). COMPUTE c1 = MIN(pos1 TO pos10). COMPUTE c3 = MAX(pos1 TO pos10). COMPUTE c2 = SUM(pos1 TO pos10)-MIN(pos1 TO pos10)-MAX(pos1 TO pos10). EXECUTE. DELETE VAR r1 TO pos10. The logic is identical to that of Marta's MATRIX solution. It has the advantage of generalizing to any number of 'c' values. In this solution, the 'r' values remain in the data; they could be dropped afterward. This is SPSS 14 draft output (WRR: not saved separately): VECTOR r = r1 TO r10 /c(3,F3). COMPUTE #NextPos = 0. Hi Bill,

I strongly oppose it. This group is for statistics and spss

I make a distinction between a job posting and a job ad. Having been recently approached by a recruiter for a job that didn't interest me, I thought it might interest any number of other contributors to this list, so posted it.
Job postings here are infrequent, and usually offered as tips between contributors, so I'm for it. I agree with others - postings are infrequent and I agree with allowing
them. As with several on this list, I am a consulting statistician and always
looking for opportunities. However, I am opposed to the list serve becoming a "job post" listing. The problem is how you police the emails so that you include
one sort of advert but not another sort. This list is one of the best lists that I am a member of, becuase of the lack of extraneous emails/ ads etc. I have seen other lists disintegrate because they move away from their original purpose. I don't want this to halppen to this one. If you want job ads/ consultancy opportunities then I suggest that you talk to the moderator and start a new list. (I'd join as well for the consultancy opportunities) Regards > > As with several on this list, I am a consulting statistician and always > looking for opportunities. Job postings are the least frequent postings I have seen on other lists I
have been on - epidemio and qualrs. Is there such a glut of jobs out there that need to be posted here and would inundate this list? Workshops and conferences are posted to this list, which to me are similar types of posts. Those posts have not harmed this list and I think they fall into a category of very infrequent but a useful exchange of info for members. Against - this list is pretty much on track as it is, IMHO.
