How to get a mean while dropping the highest and lowest score in spss

msherman

Dear List: I have 76 research proposals that have been rated by five evaluators across five dimensions.  I have totaled the scores across the dimensions and now have 76 total scores for each evaluator.  Besides using the total score (adding up for each proposal the evaluators’ ratings across the evaluators) have also converted each evaluator’s scores into z scores and then have added the z scores up (given that some evaluators use the rating scales in some very different ways). In addition, I would like to obtain the rating for each proposal while eliminating the very top and very bottom score. Is there a way in SPSS to do with? Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks,

Are you sure you want to give each dimension equal weight?  Several years ago, using a similar approach tp yours (devised and imposed unilaterally by a newly appointed panel chair) the Mark Abrams Prize went to someone whose entry, whilst laudable, was clearly not the best.
