I am using SPSS for my research project and I get this warning when trying to do an independent samples t-test:
The GROUPS subcommand specifies an unknown variable or a long string variable. This subcommand must specify either a numeric variable or a short string variable. Text found: Film I am doing a project that has an IV of film (comic vs graphic) and a DV. I have film coded for 1=comic and 2=graphic. And in the data view they are listed by number (1 or 2). I do not understand why the warning is coming up. I've tried searching what this warning means but I can't find anything. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. This is my first time using SPSS. |

What do you see in the Variable View window for your film variable?

Hi Bruce, I think I figured out what I was doing wrong. Thank you for your willingness to help, though!
Is there a way to delete my original message? |

Rather than delete your original message, you might consider posting the solution to your problem, as it might be helpful to someone else who has the same problem, either now or sometime in the future. As someone else pointed out recently (Richard Ristow, I think), this mailing list is not just a question & answer service. It's also a place for all of us to learn from seeing solutions to the problems that others encounter. ;-)

Can you post your code, please. There might be a relatively simple error
that would be clear.
