Is 16.0 Worth It?

Barry Nagle
We have yet to install 16.0 although we received the software a few
months ago.  I know that two patches have been released but there seem
to be a LOT of issues posted on the listserv about 16.0.  For those who
upgraded from 15.0, has it created more problems than it's worth?  I'm
curious because we have time right now to upgrade but I'm hesitant
because of all of the issues the software seems to have.  Thoughts?

I have the same problem. I have 16.0 in a drawer because I'm afraid that
it will cause problems if I install it. For now, I am going to leave
well enough alone.

Re: Is 16.0 Worth It?

Graham Wright-2
Our University got a license for 16 and my coworker upgraded. I had seen
postings on this list and decided to stick with 15. After a month or so,
he got so frustrated with everything that he ended up uninstalling it
and going back to 15. Since it was the university that paid for it, it
wasn't a big deal for us, but I would have been pretty mad if I had
actually shelled out my own money to pay for it, after seeing how many
problems there were.

Re: Is 16.0 Worth It?

Christian Deindl
since it is possible to install 16.0 without having to deinstall previous
versions of SPSS you can give it a try.
I have done it and encountered no problems.
but since the previous version is the default to open files, I have used
SPSS 16.0 just a few times.

Baker, Harley
This is also what I have done and found it to work quite effectively with
SPSS 16 and SPSS 14. Windows allows one to set a particular version of SPSS
as the default when opening data files.

Re: Is 16.0 Worth It?

Francien Berndsen
In reply to this post by Graham Wright-2
I've installed both spss 15 and spss 16, but I mostly use 15. The interface
of 16 is slow, I cannot print my output (I already contacted tech support,
but the Dutch version of tech support never answered my e-mail). I only use
16 when I want to change the length of a couple of string-variables, because
with version 16 that's much easier.

Along with the other messages in this thread...our entire department (12
users) installed 16.0 and after numerous issues (mostly associated with
the interface slowness, inability to generate large pivot tables) we
unaminously agreed and switched back to 15.0. Alhtough I admire the
optimism of Eric's reply to my post dated 5/16/08 (cut and pasted below),
I just can't see how anyone would find this version acceptable. IMO SPSS
should have worked on the java interface and perfected over the next
couple years while updating with the old platform. I see where SPSS is
going and looking forward to future versions...but it was too soon to make
change to the java interface.

Java.

16 has had its interface rewritten in Java.  Anything written in Java is
much slower than programming code written specifically for a given
platform.  For me, machines that ran 14 without effort now cycle their
fans to high speed under the stress of running Java.

The rewrite was a huge coding job, and I'd be surpised if SPSS was able to
do any optimizing.  It is hard to program well, especially on a tight
release cycle.  Add to that writing everything new from
scratch.  "Admirable" is how I'd word the accomplishment of turning out a
functioning yet entirely new interface in the normal release cycle
following 15.

This switch will enable SPSS to release one version for all platforms.
That efficiency will then be turned into making an even better SPSS for
everyone.

Re: Is 16.0 Worth It?

Lemon, John S.
I have been watching this thread with interest as we released 16 to our users as soon as it was available; this was at their request and although a few have retained 15 the large majority have converted to 16. There have been a few 'gripes' about the 'poor focus' of the menus but most people reckon this is outweighed by the new features that the rewritten interface has achieved. Resizing the dialog boxes, drag and drop are just a couple of the advantages that make life easier.

We believe that 16 is robust enough to support our teaching classrooms so that will be the version offered when the students return for the next academic year.

Best Wishes

Re: Is 16.0 Worth It?

John Fiedler
I bought 16, I wanted 16.
I don't really need 16.
I'm still running 15.
I am a one person shop; the last thing I need is any problems with my main
means of making money.

JOHN

Re: Is 16.0 Worth It?

Kornbrot, Diana
In reply to this post by Lemon, John S.
Spss can be justly proud of some innovations in 16
BUT the interface is definitely 1 step forward 2 steps back
Its a REAL pain not to be able to list the files by date in LIST view
ordered, when opening and saving the column view is a nuisance to navigate
WORSE is the interface for the new graphs.
I ad mire the flexibility, but the time & effort needed to get a simple
scatter plot or line graph is a real waste of my valuable time
Do NOT get rid of the legacy graphs [even if some of the features have been
dwongraded]
I really miss being able to  put the equation and r^2 on my line graphs when
doing preliminary exploration, although I understand tis probably been
removed because its an unsuitable presentation for publication

Best
Diana
