"JCAdapter not yet initialized"

Enzmann
Trying to run a script with SPSS 16.02 that ran fine with SPSS 14 and
SPSS15 I receive the error message ""JCAdapter not yet initialized".
What is the reason and what to do about this?

Re: "JCAdapter not yet initialized"

Leo Bakker-2
Hi Dirk,

JC adaptor is a piece of JAVA technology, this is the software platform that
runs spss > 15.
Seems that this is not working correct or is not installed yet.
Try to install the latest JAVA engine and see how this works.
You can get java software for free at java.com

Re: "JCAdapter not yet initialized"

Enzmann
Leo,

Thanks for these suggestions. There are still some questions, though:
- SPSS did automatically install JAVA in
"\programme\SPSSInc\SPSS16\JRE". Why does SPSS install 73MB of JAVA in
this folder if JAVA *was (and is) already* installed on my machine (in
"programme\Java\jre6\"?
- Why should the JAVA version SPSS did "install" not be the version SPSS
needs for running?
- If I try to update *my* (?) version of JAVA, *which* version in
*which* folder (as said, now there are two versions of JAVA on my
machine!)? Or: How do I tell JAVA to update which version and how do I
tell SPSS to use which version?

I compared the version installed by SPSS and the one installed earlier
by myself. The "SPSS"-Version:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
\Programme\SPSSInc\SPSS16\JRE\bin>java -version
java version "1.5.0_11"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_11-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_11-b03, mixed mode)
---------------------------------------------------------------------

"My original" version:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
\Programme\Java\jre6\bin>java -version
java version "1.6.0_13"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_13-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.3.-b02, mixed mode, sharing)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The latter is quite recent!

Yours,
Dirk

Hello Dr. Enzmann,
Your error message seems to reflect a bug that was filed for SPSS 16 running on non-English operating systems. The bug was fixed in Statistics 17 and a work-around is provided for 16 in the resolution below my signature.

Problem Subject:  Error message: JCAdapter not yet initialized in SPSS 16

Problem Description:  I have recently installed SPSS 16 on a non-English operating system and would like to run my scripts with the menu Utilities - Run script as I did in prior releases. After selecting a script and click on the run button I get an error message on a new window: JCAdapter not yet initialized. I click on the OK button but nothing happens. What is the reason?

Resolution Subject: This issue has been filed as a defect with SPSS Development and will be fixed in SPSS Statistics 17.

Resolution Description:
This issue has been filed as a defect with SPSS Development and will be fixed in SPSS Statistics 17.
A problem was found with installation of spsscom.ini. On english operating systems this file is located on C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SPSS\ but on non-english OS this file should be located in the equivalent folder of 'Application Data' (depending on the language of your OS).
As a workaround copy the folder SPSS with spsscom.ini in it from C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data to the equivalent folder on your operating system. Please make sure to copy the folder, do not cut or delete it. The path in spsscom.ini should also be pointing to the correct SPSS directory. To verify, right click on spsscom.ini, open it with a text editor and check if the path shows the correct installation directory.
After changing that you should not get the error message again.
We apologize for any inconvenience.

What does 'match files' do when performed on a single file?

mpirritano
Dearest listers,

I have data in the long longitudinal format. As a result, information
such as date of birth, or ethnicity, is repeated on multiple lines along
with the longitudinal data for that individual. I want to get a file
that lists individuals just once with their corresponding age,
ethnicity, and other demographic data that does not vary with time.

I seem to recall something about 'match files' being able to do this,
but I cannot find a reference on how to do it.

Any help -- much appreciated.

Thanks
Matt

Re: What does 'match files' do when performed on a single file?

ViAnn Beadle
Look at the FIRST subcommand for MATCH FILES. If you break on the person id
with ADDVARIABLES mode you can then create a logical variable to flag the
first case in the group with FILTER. I'll leave the syntactical details to
you to figure out from Help ;-)

There are uses for MATCH FILES on one file, but I think this one is
easier with AGGREGATE. Code not tested, but, load the file and

AGGREGATE OUTFILE=Demographics
   /BREAK     = PersonID
   /DOB       = FIRST(DOB)
   /Sex       = FIRST(Sex)
   /Ethnicity = FIRST(Ethnicity).

etc. Normally, "Demographics" is either a file handle for a disk file
you're writing to, or the name of a declared dataset.

Hi Dirk.  I am having the same problem you described in your original post (but with v17.0.2), and found this thread while searching for a solution.  Have you figured this out yet, by any chance?

Thanks,
Bruce
