Legacy data file support

D.R. Wahlgren
Why did SPSS drop support for SPSS PC+ (.sys) data files from the Mac
version several versions ago, yet it is still supported as recently
as v17 (and perhaps even in v18) on the Windows side?

Granted, I should be surprised that it's supported at all on either
platform, but still, I thought that the Mac version was just a direct
port of the Windows version, so I expected parity there.

Re: Legacy data file support

SPSS Support-2

Hi Dennis,

I'm pretty sure this is simply a bug, not a deliberate decision to drop support for PC+ .sys files. I'm not certain when it crept in, but it occurs in Releases 17 and 18. In Release 17, the menu item for PC+ files is there when you use the File>Open dialog, but a back-end error occurs when you try to open one on the Mac. In Release 18, the menu item for PC+ files also isn't there, but again I can't find any evidence that this is deliberate.

I've opened a support case and we will file a bug report. Our apologies for the glitch.

In reply to this post by D.R. Wahlgren

A correction: Apparently the SPSS/PC+ file format has never been supported on any platforms other than DOS and Windows. The SAVE TRANSLATE documentation was updated with Release 17 to indicate that this format is only available on Windows platforms, and in Release 18 on the Mac, the menu option was removed. Our apologies for the confusion.
