ViAnn Beadle recommended the manuals, of course.

The SPSS *Command Syntax Reference*, has the full
syntax; see the article "DEFINE-!ENDDEFINE".
(It's shipped as a .PDF file on the installation
CDs, I believe under name 'spssbase.pdf'.)

But I'd recommend chapter "Macros" in the 2nd
edition of Raynald Levesque's book (later
editions have much less about macros):

Levesque, Raynald, "SPSS® Programming and Data
Management, 2nd Edition/A Guide for SPSS® and
SAS® Users". SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL, 2005

All editions are circulated free as .PDF files. I
don't know if the 2nd edition is still available
on the SPSS, Inc. Web site; last I looked, the 3rd and 4th editions were, as

http://www.spss.com/spss/SPSS_programming_data_mgmt.pdf (3rd edition)
http://www.spss.com/spss/SPSSdatamgmt_4e.pdf (4th edition).

If you can't find a copy of the 2nd edition, ask, and I'll forward you one.

And look at examples of macros on Raynald
Levesque's Web site, www.spsstools.net
