Moving columns around in Variable View

John F Hall

I like to move columns around in the Data Editor to keep the (to me) more important ones on the left side (Name, Measure, Label, Values, Missing).  Moving them one at a time by highlighting then dragging is one way, but I tried highlighting two or more at a time.  Dragging more than one column at a time to a new position reverses their original order: is this deliberate or just a quirk?

David suggested using MATCH FILES which is also what I do.

Did you mean "variables view"?

I don't see this order reversal in either Data or Variable View with V22.  Also, a reminder, you can split the DE Data View screen both horizontally and vertically by dragging the rather inconspicuous mullions at the window edge or using the Window > Split menu.  The parts can be separately scrolled.

Using syntax documents what you do.
In addition, it allows you do go back and do "it" whatever way you actually want it.

the /KEEP can use "all" as an argument.
/KEEP = ID, age, gender, country, attitude1 attitude2 attitude3 all

If you use the ROLE attribute it can be useful in arranging variables via SORT CASES
roles might be "demographic" ScaleScore ScaleItem etc

Sory John,
I misread the question.  You are apparently reordering the attributes not the variables themselves.
I am able to replicate the reversal in ver 22 64 bit Windoze 8.1.
Oops ;-)  I would hardly call it deliberate.
Probably programmed on a Friday after 5PM.
Perhaps copious amounts of alcohol are to blame?

Hi  John,

To change the columns in the variable view, go to Edit > Options > Data and then click the button for “Customize Variable View.” Here you can show/hide what you need and put them in the preferred order. There’s also a button to restore defaults if you wish to revert back.

Excellent Tyler!
I must devote a day to digging around the GUI and see what other neat things have been added.
I pretty much run syntax and don't do much in the DE, but nice to know this is there.

Re: Moving columns around in Variable View

Jon K Peck
One important reason that this was added is that you can cause custom attributes you define with VARIABLE ATTRIBUTES or Data > Define Variable Properties > Attributes to appear in Variable View.  Enriched metadata can be very useful in documenting the data and can be used via programmability to build generalized jobs.

Nice one: something new to learn every day.  Never tried that, but it’s still quicker to drag the columns around in Variable View.  However, it could be useful to uncheck the attributes I rarely use, and certainly something to show newbies.

Yes: the Data Editor in Variable View, so that it looks like

Try it and see what I mean.

I suspect that if you want the same ordering for all data files then this is a one time deal and you won't have to drag anything after setting it once.

Re: Moving columns around in Variable View

I love this idea, but when I tried it, the attributes did not stay in position.  Also, the custom attributes column I have created was not listed in the customize window and that was the one I wanted to move forward.  When I create a file, variable view is as I specified (no custom attribute defined yet), but as soon as I define the custom attribute variable view reverts to the default.  Is there some way to fix this?

Also, it would be great if you could customize the width as well.  Not sure why they made the label column so small - I routinely need to widen it to be able to read the label.

One important reason that this was added is that you can cause custom attributes you define with VARIABLE ATTRIBUTES or Data > Define Variable Properties > Attributes to appear in Variable View.  Enriched metadata can be very useful in documenting the data and can be used via programmability to build generalized jobs.

Excellent Tyler!
I must devote a day to digging around the GUI and see what other neat things
have been added.
I pretty much run syntax and don't do much in the DE, but nice to know this
is there.

Re: Moving columns around in Variable View

Jon K Peck
I don't see that behavior in newer versions of Statistics, so the problem seems to have been addressed at some point after V19.

Thanks for your response Jon.

I'm using 19.0.0.2

I used edit-options-data to remove columns, align, and role from variable view and rearranged some things.  When I create any file, the view is just as I specified.  As soon as I run the following syntax, the variable view reverts to default and columns, align, and role are present along with the custom column.

VARIABLE ATTRIBUTE VARIABLES = CESDpos CESDneg CESDtot
    attribute = file ('2 CESD').

I see what you are saying about seeing the custom file in options after it's created and yes it's there at that point.  What I don't understand is why everything changes back - why not just add the custom column onto what was already there?  It's not a big deal, just would make things easier to look at.  All of my data files are constantly changing and I run programs frequently to update so I don't see any way to make things "stick" and there doesn't seem to be a syntax way to do it.

Is there anything in Python?

Can you explain more about exactly how you are doing this and what Statistics version you are using?  I don't see the behavior you describe.  For example, I created a new custom attribute using Data > Define Variable Properties, and going to the View > Customize Variable View menu in the DE, and it was there.

Since custom attributes go with a dataset, for a dataset that doesn't have a particular attribute, it shouldn't appear in the View menu for that dataset.
