Multiple repeated measures

I am directed to here with a problem. I am trying to set up an SPSS data file for a multivariate repeated measure analysis. This file involves two independent variables. Group (three levels: intermediate=1, advanced=2, and superior=3) is the between-subject varible. And TASK (two levels: Narration=1, Role play=2) is the within-subject variable. The dependent variables involves MTUL, MEFTUL, Percentage_EFTU. The SPSS file I set up is as follows, hypothetically (N=6):

The message "This variable name duplicates an existing variable name" popped up when I tried to add the "Within-Subject Factor name" as "Task" and "Number of levels" as "2" using GLM->Repeated Measures.
 
I wonder whether somebody would point out where I did wrong in setting up the data file. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Hope I made myself understood.

Your current data setup is what is used for Mixed Models, but GLM Repeated Measures wants:

Subject  Group  MTUL1  MTUL2  MEFTUL1  MEFTUL2  Pct_EFTU1  Pct_EFTU2
1        1
2        1
3        2
4        2
5        3
6        3

(I don't believe GLM Repeated technically needs a variable identifying the subjects because it assumes a single subject per row, but you should have a variable that identifies the subjects in any case, and especially if you plan to analyze the data in, say, Mixed or Genlin.)

You can either fill in the rest manusally (since it's a small dataset) or you can restructure your dataset to have the setup GLM Repeated Measures needs using the Restructure Data Wizard (Data > Restructure...).  A "how to" on doing this for GLM Repeated is in the online Case Studies (Help > Case Studies..., or click on the "Show Me" link in the main help topic of GLM Repeated Measures) in the "A Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance" section.

Unless 0 is specified as a user-missing value for those variables in the data file (check the Missing column in the Variable View of the Data Editor), I can't think of why GLM Repeated would treat 0 as missing.

Really thanks for your detailed explanation. I worked it out. Appreciate greatly your help.

 

However, I got another question. Some values of the dependent variables in the file are 0. By doing so SPSS treats them as missing values. Then I changed those zero values to .001 which I find proper. However, in the SPSS output, it still pointed out there are missing values. So I guess my problem is how to make SPSS not take 0 value as missing data.

I think this is an old trick. We need to insert a number of section titles in output that is to be printed.  The TITLE command neatly puts the document title at the top of each page.  In the VIEWER, one can manually insert a printable, one-time text title between output objects (without invoking page-eject or a page break), and that is what I want to do with syntax.  I'd also love to have it in BOLD FACE.

I think I've seen this solved numerous times, going all the way back to V6, but I can't find it in the archives or on Raynald's esteemed SPSS Tools site.

Please be kind to an old man and refresh his memory.

Hi,

the command TITLE in the syntax inserts page title.
TITLE "YourTitleText" .

As for the font it can be set with Menu/Edit/Options-Viever before running the syntax. Dont know if it can be set with syntax.

I think echo writes to the log block, which might not be what you want.

But there is a Python method to create a text block, so you could incorporate that in your syntax stream -- without any EXECUTE commands.  The text block would take the default formatting assigned in Options, so you could specify bold there.

Perhaps this is more a question for the SPSS sales representatives, but I'd
like to hear about user's experience with this issue as well.

I currently have  Basic single user SPSS, ver. 12 and I obviously need to
upgrade.
We were on track for an upgrade of my Single User version to ver. 15 when
we ran into a snag between our University and SPSS over the shrink wrap
license terms for our P.O., where the terms SPSS insists on will "nullify
the pertinent Terms & Conditions that apply to all RCUH purchase orders...
If [SPSS] terms are accepted please be aware that in the event that the
product is lost during shipment or received and opened by your department,
the item cannot  be returned or credit claimed from the vendor."

I don't want a fight here, and I don't want to make things difficult for
our department's business manager. It looks to me like what is at stake
here is that on this P.O., we are attempting to purchase directly from
SPSS, instead of purchasing the annual Base "maintenance" version, and our
university doesn't like that, and is saying, in effect, you deal with SPSS
at your own risk if you want to do it that way. But order the annual Base
"Maintenance" version through us under our contract with SPSS and
everything will be copacetic.

OK, that's all prologue to my question, which is this: If I install the
current annual Base "Maintenance" version over my old ver. 12 Single User
Base version, will I lose any functionality? Obviously, I'll gain whatever
advances have been built into the newer versions of the Base, but does the
Single User Base version have more features that I might lose? Is the
annual "Maintenance" version in any way stripped down from the Single User
version? Or is the functionality of the "Base" unit of the Single User
exactly the same as the "Maintenance" version, except for the expiration
date? Can I install the "Maintenance" version in a separate directory so
that when it expires, if needed, I can revert to the old Single User version?

The reason I ask this question is that decades ago, through a lack of
understanding about the different editions of SPSS, by mistake I installed
a "Maintenance" version over a Single User version. I then discovered that
(a) I lost some functionality, and (b) when the year was over, I had
nothing. The old Single User version was no longer accessible. So if I
change, I don't want to be wishing that I hadn't.
