Multiple versions of SPSS

Bob Schacht-3
I have SPSS ver 12 installed as a permanent copy (not subjected to annual
renewal). I know this is not the precise terminology, but it is important
to me that I can continue to use this version without needing to pay an
annual renewal fee-- we had to pay more to get this feature, and I don't
want to lose it.

I now want to install a ver. 16 copy that we bought, that is subject to
annual renewal. If I just blithely install ver. 16, I'm pretty sure that
its going to over-write my ver. 12 and convert it to an annual renewal, and
I will lose access to my old version forever. However, when I tried to
re-name the SPSS folder to something else, ver. 12 would no longer work,
and when I re-registered using the correct serial number, etc., what it did
was to create a new "SPSS" folder, ignoring my new folder. In other words,
it seems to be that the only way ver. 12 can continue to work is for it to
remain in the "SPSS" folder.

How can I install the new version without disrupting the old version, so
that I can use either version whenever I want to? Both versions are bought
and paid for. I am addressing this question to the list because I bet
others have asked the same question, or want to know the answer.

Why would a factor that shows up as non-significant in a model in which
we're trying to determine significant factors influencing the dependent
variable reduce the predictive quality (percentage correct) of the model if
we eliminate it?

As far as I have been able to tell you should be able to run the two programmes on the same machine because 16 will install by default into a folder C:\Program Files\SPSSInc\SPSS16 by default and so shouldn't affect your version 12 SPSS folder.

Zdaniuk, Bozena-2
Are you sure this is the case? I remember when we wanted to run two versions of spss data entry software we needed very specific directions from spss support how to change some things in some .exe files, or something like that.

Re: Multiple versions of SPSS

Kylie
Hi Bob,

I can't speak specifically to version 16, but I can't imagine that anything
relevant to my advice has changed.

I often have two or three different versions of SPSS installed. When
installing a new version I simply select a new installation folder
(eg, /Program Files/SPSS15/), rather than the default /Program Files/SPSS/.
The different versions and their licensing details (contained in the
lvserv.lic file - writing from memory so there may be a typo in that file
name) are then happily residing in different folders. I have never had any
problems with the different versions overriding each other or having
conflicting licensing information, in doing this with versions 10, 11.5, 12,
14 or 15.

As John wrote, as long as you choose a different installation folder for SPSS
16, version 12 should remain unaffected.

Cheers,
Kylie.

Re: Multiple versions of SPSS

Eric Zylstra
We had significant problems when SPSS 15 and SPSS 16 were installed on the same machine.  It seemed that certain libraries were used in common between the applications and the verions for SPSS 16 prevented SPSS 15 from working properly.  It was a mess.

I am astounded that the world of statistics is in such remarkable flux as to require new versions every year.  Thank goodness SPSS is able to stay on top of it!      :-/

Re: Multiple versions of SPSS

Weeks, Kyle
Eric, I'm afraid that you were give some incorrect information, there are no "common libraries" that prevent 15 and 16 from coexisting properly.

It is possible to have issues if you have installed over an existing installation as implied in the stream below, but John Lemon has it right. If you install into separate directories, you shouldn't have any problems.

Is this also true of the Mac versions? v13 was very stable and almost
entirely bug-free (as far as the things I used it for), but once I
installed v16 on the same computers, I started noticing some serious
problems with v13.  For example, it now crashes very reliably (ie,
every time) when trying to open any kind of file (data, syntax or
output) via the dialog boxes.  I have to open them from syntax or
from the Finder.

This could have been a coincidence with an OS update or something
else, but it seemed to happen at the same point in time that I
installed v16.  I haven't started using v16 much because it's just so
slow on the PowerPC Macs (I have G5s).

John Lemon is quite correct about being able to run SPSS12 and 16 from
the same machine. Here at the University of Sheffield we are doing
SPSS12 and SPSS 15 for the whole of the Open Access Machines, which
gives added complexity. You are fortunate that your old copy is SPSS 12,
with version 13 this would not be true due to licensing changes.

The only platform 13 and 16 can co-exist is PowerPC, as SPSS 13 does not run on the Intel hardware.  The problem Dennis is reporting has to do with Spotlight. Disabling this will resolve the issue.

Re: Multiple versions of SPSS

Ian Martin-2
Kyle,

Will disabling Spotlight allow SPSS V.16 to open files (.sav, .xls,
etc.) via the File>Open menu on an Intel Mac (MacBook Pro, OS 10.5.2)?

I cannot get V.16 to open ANY files other than the sample data files
that came with V.16.  All I get is error msg "Text value unmappable
in the current server locale".   And copy/paste from Excel does not
work either: all values are pasted either into the first cell in the
SPSS data window, or else into the first row of cells.

Incidentally, I have seen SPSS V.11 running reliably on an Intel Mac.

Re: Multiple versions of SPSS

Weeks, Kyle
Ian, these issues should really be directed to Tech Support ([hidden email]).  That being, said I think the issue is that you have the data files sroted in paths that have non-English characters.  This problem was fixed in 16.0.1 so you should download the 16.0.1 patch at http://support.spss.com/Tech/default.asp

Re: Multiple versions of SPSS

Ian Martin-2
Thanks for the background on this Kyle, but it's certainly not fixed
in 16.0.1, as that is what I am using.

However, I have been able to open a V.11 file by moving it to the
SPSS V.16 Samples folder.  I see now from your explanation that SPSS
V.16.0.1 does not like me naming a folder named with an ending
character <Option-f> which is a convention I have gotten used to
(eg.; ProjectÆ’).

I appreciate the tip on the workaround.  Now if anybody can tell me
how to paste from Excel....?

Customizing the cell table-Juan

Albertorio, Juan R. (CDC/CCHIS/NCHS)
Hola!

I need to know if there is any python or syntax available to custom the
tables. I have been fixing the amount of decimal places for the standard
error by hand (using table properties) for crosstab tables and I am
getting tire of it.

Thanks!

Re: Customizing the cell table-Juan

Peck, Jon
This could be done with a script, but in the statistics subdialog or in the statistics part of the TABLE subcommand, you can specify the exact format for any statistic.

Unfortunately, disabling Spotlight did not entirely fix the problem.
It still crashes the instant I select a data file in an Open File
dialog box.  It does seem to have fixed the crashing when opening
syntax and output, however.

Incidentally, there doesn't appear to be a singular way to disable
Spotlight.  The only thing I could do was to deselect all 14 search
options in the preference pane (and uncheck the 2 keyboard shortcut
options, just in case).
