Dear SPSS-L, I doubt this will make any difference to those who set up away messages to the email address that receives SPSS-L posts, but I want to state that it is somewhat frustrating to receive several away messages when I post a message to SPSS-L. What's worse is when there's this odd feedback loop where I receive MULTIPLE away messages from the same email address based on ONE message that I posted.
Other than ignoring it, is there something else that can be done? Look, I realize this issue is trivial compared to just about anything else in life, but I feel the need to express my frustration, and ask if there is a solution (aside from simply ignoring it) of which I am not aware.
Thanks, Ryan

If you find it that troubling, I suggest you put a message filter in
your email clietn that filters out any message with the phrase 'Out of Office' in it.... You can take that step if it is that upsetting to you MK -- ===================== To manage your subscription to SPSSX-L, send a message to [hidden email] (not to SPSSX-L), with no body text except the command. To leave the list, send the command SIGNOFF SPSSX-L For a list of commands to manage subscriptions, send the command INFO REFCARD |

Hi Ryan. Maybe one of the solutions discussed in this 2009 thread will work for you:

I have not yet completely moved to Nabble so I do not know if that has
filters.
I heard and have not implemented it that Nabble can send messages to your usual mail program. I use Thunderbird and have filters that I update each time I come across a new format for an out of office message, e.g., in some other language. I started this a dozen years or so ago. I only rarely get an out of office message. If you are using some other mail program it most likely has similar filters, since the concept of filters for messages was around on DecNet in the 70s and later around 1980 on Bitnet. Filtering all 'out of office' messages would not do. It should be all 'out
of office' messages that respond to an SPSSX-L message, which is difficult to set up. And then, the words are not always in English ('out of office') but in whatever language the user is using, from Turkish to German or Finnish. I have been also bothered by this for years, and have no adequate solution. I could only suggest people adopt a general rule, valid not only for this list but for everybody: If you wish to set up an automatic out of office message, do it ONLY for periods in which you are not present during work hours (for instance, when you are on leave or travelling). Do NOT set up your system to send automatic 'out of office' messages whenever the time is off your normal working hours (e.g. when it is not Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm). THAT would do the trick, if everybody cooperates. Many people have the annoying habit of sending an automatic out-of-office message from 5 pm to next-day's 9 am, and during week-ends, i.e. at times they are NOT supposed to be in the office. If I send a message to you whenever is the evening or a Saturday in your time zone, I already know that most people in those time zones would not be at their office, and need no advise about that unfortunate but altogether expected circumstance. Just let the message lie there until 9am tomorrow (or Monday), and do not bother me with your useless message that you've gone home for dinner. Avoidance of this annoying habit would substantially reduce email clutter, not only in SPSSX-L but in global email traffic around the world, thus greatly reducing worldwide annoyance and enhancing the happiness of mankind, without any reduction in information or efficiency. But calling for universal cooperation is usually fruitless, I know. Hector -----Mensaje original----- De: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] En nombre de M. I find them quite annoying but somewhat manageable.
When I receive them in my email I simply mark them as SPAM and most of the time I don't get anything from the twits that seem to be on permanent leave. Wonder if it is possible to ban certain individuals from replying to the list (there are about a dozen who's only contribution to the list over the years have been out of orifice replies)!!!
Please reply to the list and not to my personal email.
Those desiring my consulting or training services please feel free to email me. --- "Nolite dare sanctum canibus neque mittatis margaritas vestras ante porcos ne forte conculcent eas pedibus suis." Cum es damnatorum possederunt porcos iens ut salire off sanguinum cliff in abyssum?" |

The most incredibly ANNOYING are people who have a out of orifice reply to EVERY message which passes through. I sent an email to one such person and ended up receiving 2 OOOR's from that.
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE AS DIGEST!!! Maybe the provider will nuke the account for excessive spamming! ---

I use MSN Hot-mail/ Live-mail and mark the offender as Junk.
That moves this present email and future mail from the sender to the Junk folder. - But, be careful - In some sense, the List is the sender. When I once used the option of banning the sender, all my List mail disappeared until I un-did the option. Whenever the Junk folder has mail in it, I go there and EMPTY the folder, after quickly scanning the Subjects to see that they all deserve to be there. Jon got in there once. -- Rich Ulrich > Date: Tue, 15 Jan 2013 07:09:18 -0800 > From: [hidden email] > Subject: Re: OT: AWAY MESSAGES > To: [hidden email] > > I find them quite annoying but somewhat manageable. > When I receive them in my email I simply mark them as SPAM and most of the > time I don't get anything from the twits that seem to be on permanent leave. > Wonder if it is possible to ban certain individuals from *replying* to the > list (there are about a dozen who's only contribution to the list over the > years have been out of orifice replies)!!! > > ... |

In GMAIL the 'spam' switch isn't always reliable but most of the OOOR crap ends up in the bit bucket.
When I reply to messages in Nabble I usually/always check the 'Alert me by email when someone posts to this thread' option. [** SO no need to CC on anything hint hint, also explains my annoyance when people start new topics by changing the subject line**] Oddly, sometimes my own messages and other people's legitimate replies end up in the spam so I periodically need to sort through the thoughtful letters from all the generous people who want to make me rich, the horny Russian girls, the lawyers of deposed despots who need to launder cash, the meals for starving, drug addicted lab rats foundation etc... Yeah, that all makes my eyes bleed!
